چکیده

Hypersexuality has been defined as the subjective experience of loss of control over sexuality (Catalan and Singh, 1995). It is known to be associated with mood, impulse and compulsive disorder (Coleman and Kafka, 1991) and with biological factors such as brain injury involving septal nuclei (Gorman and Cummins, 1992) and dementia (Potocnik, 1992). Sexual addiction is synonymous with hypersexuality, which is defined as a condition in which some form of sexual behaviour is employed in a pattern that is characterized by two key factors : (1) recurrent failure to control the sexual behaviour and (2) continuation of the sexual behaviour despite significant harmful consequences (Goodman, 1998). Kafka (1991) defined non-paraphilic sexual addictions as culturally acceptable sexual interests and behaviours that increase in frequency or intensity so as to significantly interfere with the desired capacity for a sustained intimate sexual relationship. These behaviours may include compulsive masturbation, dependence on anonymous sexual outlets like pornography, or telephone sex, and repetitive promiscuity involving using people as sexual objects. Over recent times a lot of interest has been generated in understanding the physiological aspects and pharmacological management of hypersexuality/sexual addiction/compulsive sexual behaviour. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been proposed as a treatment option following studies demonstrating their inhibitory effect on 5-HT2 receptors (Kafka, 1995). Here we report a case believed to be the first of its kind of a patient with hypothalamic hamartoma and hypersexuality who responded to citalopram.

Whether all patients with Central precocious puberty should be treated?

Extended Abstract   Precocious puberty is the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics before 8 years old in girls and 9 years old in boys. Precocious puberty is divided into 3 groups of central, peripheral and normal variants. Central precocious puberty is accompanied by activation of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis which causes increase in secretion of GnRH, and in turn increase i...

Is precocious puberty linked to hypothalamic expression of arginine-phenylalanine-amide-related peptide?

The up-regulator regulation and down-regulator regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in central precocious puberty is not yet known. However, recent advances in neuroendocrinology have shown the controlling role of arginine-phenylalanine (RF)-amide-related peptides (RFRPs) on GnRH secretion in different phenomenon of reproduction such as estrus cycle and pregnancy, but the exact r...

Central precocious puberty secondary to hypothalamic hamartoma

Introduction Central precocious puberty (CPP) presenting at a very young age is likely to have an underlying pathology. One of the pathologies is hypothalamic hamartoma (HH), a non-neoplastic tumour-like lesion located at the floor of the third ventricle, near the tuber cinereum. Two young children with CPP due to HH without gelastic seizures or mental retardation were successfully managed and ...

Hypothalamic hamartoma in an unusual case with delayed puberty.

Hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) is a rare intracranial lesion that usually presents with classic triad of central precocious puberty, gelastic epilepsy, and developmental delay. Herein, a 14-year old boy is presented in whom the diagnosis of HH was made by magnetic resonance imaging. While he did not have any complain of precocious puberty, he surprisingly suffered from delay in puberty. The defini...

An 11-month-old girl with central precocious puberty caused by hypothalamic hamartoma

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is caused by premature activation of the hypothalamic-gonadal axis, and must be treated adequately. In particular, CPP that occurs at a relatively young age or in boys is likely to be caused by an organic lesion. Hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) is the most common organic cause of CPP. The present case report describes an 11-month-old female infant who presented with...
